Primitive Skills / "Survival" Campout
How to build a debris hut shelter: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Some Scouts may want to try this one. For others, just sleeping under a lean-to or A-frame shelter made from natural materials, or even a plastic sheet or tarpaulin, is "primitive." How to make a fire with a bow and drill set.
How about some "primitive" cooking skills (remember that for many Scouts, using a camp stove and pots is "primitive"; these ideas [some familiar] should widen their horizons and provide some fun).
Depending on where/when you are, have your Scouts try to make a working solar still for water (and have them find out how precious water can be in a primitive situation).
We know that primitive skills is not necessarily "wilderness survival," but could not resist including this excellent presentation on Wilderness Survival BSA Style (expand to full screen for best effect).
Attached below is a minimum list of items to be included in a "survival kit." Pack so as to require the smallest container. Add other items, if you wish - just remember, the more you add, the bigger the container required.
